"Eugene's La Salon des Refuse"
1999-09-18 until 1999-10-08
Maude Kerns Art Center
Eugene, OR, USA United States of America

Maude Kerns Art Center of Eugene, Oregon is hosting the 9th annual La Salon des Refuse to counter the rival Mayor's Art show held during the famed Eugene Celebration. All works refused by the official Mayor's show will be hung. This year the organizing committee is protesting the increasing privatization of the official art show and celebration, now sponsored by Centennial Bank.

As a protest, Refuse artists are calling for a string of Courbet tents that will allow individual artists to show additional works up and down the streets leading to the Art Center. This will move the Celebration to the University neighborhood, away from the Bank controlled downtown area where fees are charged to enter.

The Coubet tent idea is the brainchild of Eugene artist, Jerry Ross, who originated the idea for Eugene's La Salon des Refuse. Gustave Courbet used a tent to show his works during the World Exhibition of 1855.
