"Will the Show Go On..."
0000-00-00 until 0000-00-00
Brooklyn Museum of Art
Brooklyn, , USA United States of America

New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani stepped up his attack on the Brooklyn Museum of Art Monday, threatening to terminate its lease with the city and possibly even seize control of the museum if the exibition SENSATION: The Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection opens Saturday. The Exhibition is to be one of Brooklyn Museums blockbusters for the year.

The Mayor took offense to the subject matter of the exhibit, particularly one piece of art that depicts an African interpretation of the Virgin Mary on a canvas containing textural elements of elephant feces. There are concerns that the Catholic community may be so highly disturbed by the image that funding should be pulled. Once again, the First Amendment’s Freedom of Speech is coming under question. Should public funding support an exhibition that might offend a small portion of the viewing audienceNULL

The exhibition has been given a rating and children under 17 must be accompanied by a parent to enter the exhibit.

The exhibition traveled from the Brooklyn from The Royal Academy of Arts in London where it showed in 1997. SENSATION is sponsored by Christies in association with Time Out.
