This is the 100th time that the Confederation has presented awards in the fine arts and architecture. These awards, which have become an indispensable instrument in fostering Swiss artists, have been renamed art prize, indicating that the recognition of promising artistic achievements is considered as important as financial support. As a seismograph of current developments, the federal competition carries considerable weight and often provides the first public platform for young people in the arts. Cases in point are the onetime award winners Pipilotti Rist and Beat Streuli. The Kunsthalle is pleased to be the forum in this centenary year for a special presentation of the selected artists.
