The Pew Charitable Trusts, the American Association of Museums (AAM) and the J. Paul Getty Trust released a new handbook on intellectual property and trademark law for museums. A Museum Guide to Copyright and Trademark addresses a broad range of issues related to museum collections, exhibits, fair use and the digital environment.
A Museum Guide to Copyright and Trademark was underwritten by a major grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts and is the product of a
unique partnership between theAmerican Association of Museums and the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Guide
was developed with the help of focus groups of museum professionals
as well as examples and comments solicited from the museum field. Its
content and direction was steered by both museum professionals and a
legal advisory team.
As keepers of our national treasures, museums are stewards of our
collective heritage. The Pew Charitable Trusts are very pleased to be able
to work with the American Association of Museums and The J. Paul Getty
Trust to produce this guide, said Rebecca W. Rime, president and CEO
of The Pew Charitable Trusts. Providing museums with this timely and
important advice will help them balance the rights of the intellectual
property owner and the public's access to these cultural riches.
A Guide to Museum Copyright and Trademark is designed to provide a
general understanding of legal principles as well as answer specific
questions using actual and hypothetical examples.
