Italy was a magnet for artists north of the Alps well before the 19th century, but publication of the complete edition of Johann Wolfgang Goethe's Italian Journey in 1829--an account of his travels there in the late 1780s--inspired German artists to undertake their own aesthetic pilgrimages to Rome.

Covering a particularly productive period, 1829-1865, this exhibition will explore what several generations of Düsseldorf artists brought back from these southern encounters, and how their experiences transformed the German art world in the second half of the 19th century.
