"Music video by Munro Galloway"
2000-05-28 until 2000-06-18
Lazy J
Brooklyn, NY, USA United States of America

The music video-locus of pop music, youth culture and fashion-is an expression of our cultural unconsciousness, a concentration of our collective desire for stardom and sex in the space of three minutes. Working within the genre of the music video, Munro Galloway evokes an urban zone of pleasure and spectacle, a 'floating city',of images mined from Hong Kong and Tokyo film.

A remix of a popular song, digitally filtered beyond immediate recognition, provides the backdrop to this video meditation on the nocturnal landscape. As the city sleeps, it dreams itself awake-the streets are transformed into a stage for the nightly ritual of desire and longing, and ultimately desolation and solitude. In an accompanying series of photographic wall murals, Galloway suggests the urban scenery of lighted billboards and subway posters, or the reflection of our own selves caught in a darkened window.

Galloway moves between local and global, past and present, East and West, telescoping through layers of representation. (Jan Avgikos, Artforum) In an accelerated global visual economy, Western culture is exported to the East, and then folded back into a hybridized field of fashion, film, and pop music, producing a sense of vertigo and displacement. In this way, Galloway imagines an urban space which, like the floating city, is at once exotic and familiar.

The Lazy J focuses on showing emerging and mid-career artists living in NewYork, with special emphasis on video and digital art. Also serves as video editing ranch.
