"do it"
2000-06-30 until 2000-08-27
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Scottsdale, AZ, USA

Works that involve everyday activities by artists from the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America are presented by way of written instructions. The artworks can be made by anyone, and the number of participants involved in their creation is unlimited. The instructions simply establish a framework and a site -- either the museum or the home -- in which the works can be made. The museum selects from among the thirty do it museum instructions and assigns the production of artworks to participants as desired.

Those charged with the execution of the artworks must exercise their interpretative skills, for, like a musical composition, each version of a work in do it is meant to be a unique realization of the instructions. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the museum documents, then destroys all artworks unless otherwise stipulated by the artists. The artists represented in do it include Marina Abramovi , John Baldessari, Christian Boltanski, Maria Eichhorn, Gilbert & George, Allan Kaprow, Mike Kelley, Yoko Ono, Nancy Spero, Rosemarie Trockel, Franz West, and Erwin Wurm.

do it is a traveling exhibition conceived and curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and organized and circulated by Independant Curators International (ICI), New York, a national non-profit traveling exhibition service specializing in contemporary art. The exhibition, tour, and catalogue are made possible, in part, by ICI's International Associates and by a grant from Étant donnés. do it is based on a project of the same name initiated in 1992 and financed by AFAA, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paris, France.
