"The Sacred Corner: Russian Icons from the Collection of Daniel Bibb"
2000-11-11 until 2001-01-07
Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
Montgomery, AL, USA

The term icon derives from the Greek word eikon, meaning likeness or image. Collector Daniel R. Bibb of Atlanta, Georgia has assembled a group of traditional icons—paintings on wooden panels that depict sacred members of the Christian hierarchy.

The manner in which the figures are shown, as well as the way in which the panels are painted, reflects a craft that has existed for centuries in eastern Europe and Asia. This exhibition includes Russian icons dating from the 17th through early 20th centuries. These hand-painted, holy images are richly embellished with silver gilt, gold vermeil, colored enameling, and gold-leaf frames containing semi-precious stones.
