"Stephen Samerjan: Forces of Nature - Telling Tales"
2001-03-23 until 2001-06-03
John Michael Kohler Arts Center
Sheboygan, WI, USA United States of America

Stephen Samerjan's interest in the arrangement of line, form, and color is explored on both canvas and paper. Samerjan draws his inspiration from the flora and fauna of his native California where he visits regularly and from the shared artistic preoccupation with the human form, the organization of space, and basic to complex mark marking found throughout history from prehistoric Africa, to classical Greece and the early astronomers, to modern day. His works have a physicality wherein, according to critic James Wood, the growth, development, and the metamorphosis from the precision of geometry to the spirituality of a kind of life-essence seem to occur organically.

Stephen Samerjan has been an associate professor of painting and drawing at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee for over twenty years while concurrently establishing himself as a significant Wisconsin artist. Samerjan has said that painting is about freedom and beauty...about taking risks and making connections...It is my ambition as well that a painting I make should allow me to see something in a way I have not...

The performing arts also emphasize contemporary art forms in programming that unites the regional arts community and national visiting artists. With the completion of its expansion, the new 99,000-square-foot Arts Center comprises ten galleries, an intimate theatre, a flexible interdisciplinary performance space, studio-classrooms, meeting spaces, Flying Colors shop, and Carriage House Café.
