"Residency Opportunity for Visual Artists "
2001-05-06 until 2001-12-31
Pouch Cove Foundation
St. Johns, NF, CA Canada

ince 1990, the Pouch Cove Foundation has been providing studio/residence space to visiting artists from around the world. The program provides visting artists with four weeks use of the property on the edge of the North Atlantic Ocean. The residency includes exclusive use of one of the two 1000 square foot furnished studio/residences to use by artists for a full month. The studios overlook the ocean, and provide a spectacular view for any artist. Many of the artists who have produced artwork in Pouch Cove have been inspired by the Newfoundland landscape, and their experience at the residency continues to inform their art practice.

The Pouch Cove Foundation has been funded by the Baird Family in an effort to assist visual artists experience our unique culture and in turn, have those artists show the province to the world. To date we have hosted artists from all provinces of Canada, many of the United States, as well as Ireland, England, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, and the Netherlands.

In 2001 the Foundation is establishing a second facility in Corner Brook on the west coast of the island. This property will house two year-round 1000 square foot live/work spaces overlooking the Bay of Islands.

Part of the pleasure of the program is the casual nature of the place. What started by accident has become an important part of Newfoundland's culture. Many former residents have acquired homes in the province an visit regularly.
