"Tribal Vision: Photography by Wayne Quilliam"
2001-05-15 until 2001-06-15
Café Macchiato
Canberra, , AU Australia

Internationally acclaimed Aboriginal Photographer Wayne Quilliam in conjunction with a number of local artists have developed a unique series of images that will be exhibited at Canberra’s Café Macchiato over the next month. Wayne originally from the Big River Tribe in Tasmania combines traditional aboriginal creativity with modern photographic processes.

My work reflects the affiliation our people have with the land and the continual building of relationships with non-indigenous people. The theme of this exhibition involves the use of natural landscapes and the human figure, each image represents my spiritual contact with what our people call 'mother earth'. Wayne said. The choice of Café Macchiato was easy, owners Yves Cousinard and Christine Bayer were extremely supportive and a collaborative effort by all involved has ensured we have a series of images that accentuate the decor and showcase indigenous art to people that may not necessarily visit art galleries.

Wayne is one of the few Indigenous artists that have work exhibited at the Kyoto Gallery, Japan. He is also featured at the new permanent Baygul exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum and has won numerous awards in International Photographic competitions. Due to the growing interest in the exhibition a number of local artists have come on board and will be assisting Wayne during the evolution of the progressive work.
