"Jade, The Ultimate Treasure of Ancient China"
2001-06-09 until 2001-08-19
Art Gallery of Hamilton
Hamilton, ON, CA Canada

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is proud present Jade, The Ultimate Treasure of Ancient China. Never before has such a fine collection of jade toured outside of the Peoples Republic of China; the AGH is honoured to be only gallery in southern Ontario to host this magnificent traveling exhibition.

Bringing together over 120 individual pieces and sets of jade, the exhibition - presented by JNE Consulting Limited and Turkstra Lumber -- is a rare opportunity to experience firsthand the stone that has played such a central and revered role in the lives of the Chinese people. Since Neolithic times, jade has been the most prized stone in China, used for sacred objects, decoration and ornament. The importance placed on the stone is evident in the highlight of the exhibition: the 2nd century BC mortuary suit of Han dynasty Princess Douwan. This spectacular piece is comprised of 2,156 plates of jade sewn with 703 grams of gold thread and is estimated to have taken an expert jadesmith over 10 years to complete.

Most of the jade pieces included in the exhibition were uncovered in important archaeological digs; the earliest works date as far back as the 5th millennium BC. Please join us on this exceptional and beautiful journey through the world of jade.

The exhibition is organized by The Canadian Foundation for the Preservation of Chinese Cultural and Historical Treasures and China Cultural Relics Coordination Centre. Supported by the Government of Canada through Canada Travelling exhibitions indemnification program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
