"The Happy Face of Globalization"
2001-07-21 until 2001-08-31
Biennial of Ceramics in Contemporary Art
Albissola, , IT Italy

Over the last year, 25 internationally-recognized artists from all over the world have descended on Albisola where they have addressed the town's centuries-old ceramics tradition. All of the works produced by the artists in collaboration with local craftsmen will be featured in an exhibition to be held from 21 July, 2001 through 31 August, 2001, in Albisola (Liguria, Italy).

In an homage to the twentieth-century avantgarde tradition, some of the prime examples of which found an outlet in Albisola, the exhibition presents, along with the works of the invited artists, a selection of works in ceramics produced by Lucio Fontana, Pinot Gallizio, Asger Jorn, Wifredo Lam and Piero Manzoni from the second half of the last century during their lengthy stays in this town in Liguria.

The combination of participating artists and local craftspeople, along with the international critics and curators who have provided theoretical texts for the catalogue, ensures the rich dialectic link-up between tradition and modernity, global and local, which underpins this exhibition. The whole multi-cultural exchange points to the Happy Face of Globalization, in stark contrast with the rampant leveling of culture which is underway on a planetary level.

Cooperation, mobility, hospitality and metamorphosis are also behind the exhibition's move, in Summer 2002, to the Ariana Museum, Geneva.
