"BLUR and TELLING TALES - Two Exhibitions open Today"
2001-10-05 until 2001-11-11
Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts
Perth, WA, AU

BLUR: by Paul Capor - Inspired by the history of Perth and its often uncomfortable relationship with the surrounding suburbs and the people who inhabit them, local artist Paul Caporn has constructed a walk-through, multi-media installation at PICA. TELLING TALES: the child in contemporary photography - Looking back on life, childhood can be seen as a time of lost innocence, or maybe its just a time of lost memories. Eleven of Australias best contemporary photographers have been brought together in a major exhibition at PICA, to take a close look at the subject.

BLUR: The layered video projection contained inside a nine metre structure merges historical images taken since the foundation of Perth with images from recent Australia Day Skyshows.

The complex steel and translucent polyester structure captures the manipulated video images with historical quotes in text becoming visible once the observers shadow falls onto the walls of the structure. Paul describes the purpose of the structure as a means of totally enveloping the viewer in snippets of local history, evoking a sense of participation within the artwork and our shared local history.

TELLING TALES: Telling tales examines children and childhood from personal and cultural perspectives by presenting new readings of the intimate family snapshot and portraits of children.

In her catalogue essay for the exhibition, Anne Marsh describes how images of children are culturally loaded and marked with symbolic importance that can render them almost sacred.
