"Winifred Nicholson"
2001-10-06 until 2001-11-17
Sheffield Galleries and Museum Trust, Graves Art Gallery
Sheffield, , UK United Kingdom

Winifred Nicholson was a painter whose life and art crossed many boundaries - artistic and geographical. She travelled and painted in France, Greece and Morocco before settling in Cumbria where she painted her most characteristic and lyrical still lives and landscapes.

The exhibition includes paintings which illustrate the whole of Nicholsons career, from early landscapes to later explorations of prismatic colour. Her subjects are landscapes, flowers, still lifes and figures, but above all they are paintings of colour and light. Although best known for her delightful flower paintings produced in Cornwall and the South of France, Nicholson continued to develop as an artist.

Her later work demonstrates an interest in the independence of colour from form, and the way in which particular colours can manipulate movement within a painting. Winifred Nicholson was born in Oxford in 1893 and studied at the Byam School of Art. In 1920 she married the painter Ben Nicholson and worked with him in Switzerland and Cumberland, also often visiting London and Paris.
