"Life-Size: Photographs by Cynthia Greig"
2001-10-19 until 2001-11-30
Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts
Grand Rapids, MI, USA United States of America

Jonathon Swifts Gulliver and Lewis Carrolls Alice experienced a skewed sense of proportion and reality as they made their way through strange new lands. Photographing miniature-sized objects that appear life-size in scale, Cynthia Greig invents a world where gigantic, abstracted figures fumble to hold and operate tiny tools and everyday objects.

Any sense of natural order or familiarity is disturbed by the uneasy relationships found between human subjects and the miniscule objects they attempt to master. Greigs photographs examine the betrayal of appearance, and the deception of nostalgia, inviting the viewer to look beyond the obvious surface of things, and focus on that which lies between seeing and not seeing.
