Indepth Arts News: "Images of the Miccosukee" 2002-02-08 until 2002-03-31 Appleton Museum of Art Ocala, FL, USA United States of America
In the 1930s, many of these photographs were made into postcards and sold to tourists. Sheffield and Randle both went on to other life pursuits, and the photographic negatives remained largely forgotten until Randle’s death in 1987.
Equipped with a tripod, a 5 x 7 view camera, and gifts of combs, mirrors, and homemade root beer, the women amazed the Miccosukee.
Sheffield recalls: They had seen white men back in there hunting before. But to see two white women by themselves was something new. Aunty and I loved them. And I think, at the least, they respected us.
