"Process and Emergence 3: Madeleine Challender"
2003-03-08 until 2003-03-16

Process and Emergence 3 is an exhibition of two new mixed media light installations by emerging artist Madeleine Challender. Madeleine Challender graduated with honours from the Canberra School of art in 1999. Her study included a six-month period in Paris at L’ecole des Beaux Arts. She has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Canberra, Brisbane, Paris and Vancouver.

Process involves an arrangement of melting ice, perspex objects and fibre optic lighting. A system of light refractions gradually emerges to connect and create a complex network. This work relates to the processes and dynamics of nature from which life developed, and considers the point at which consciousness evolved.

Emergence 3 incorporates dynamic lighting and objects made with perspex and ice to create a sequence of refractions which gradually change, connect and develop. This work relates to the progression of living systems - the evolution of biological life, the development of consciousness and the emergence of social networks/systems. Energy is an essential component in the process of developing order in living systems. The work examines the significance and management of energy in the context of both biological and cultural evolution.
