"Women of Mexico: Photographs by Lola Alvarez Bravo, Marianna Yampolsky, Graciela Iturbide, Flor Garduno and Marcela Taboada"
2004-08-06 until 2004-09-18
Throckmorton Fine Art
New York, NY, USA United States of America

Throckmorton Fine Art is pleased to announce the exhibition: Women of Mexico, Photographs by Lola Alvarez Bravo (1907-1993), Marianna Yampolsky (1925-2002), Graciela Iturbide (b.1942), Flor Garduno (b.1957) and Marcela Taboada (b.1958). The images captured by this remarkable group of women are unprecedented within the field of fine art photography. Each individual photographer provides us with a unique glance into the lives of Mexican people from Lola Alvarez Bravo’s vintage work of the 1930’s through to the American debut of Marcela Taboada’s Women of Clay images.

The opportunity to see the work of these artists displayed side by side in a group show demonstrates the many parallels in their work. The influence of the Mexican master Manuel Alvarez Bravo is evident with each of the five photographers. Lola Alvarez Bravo was influenced by her husband, Yampolsky studied with Lola in the 1940’s, Iturbide was Manual Alvarez Bravo’s assistant in the 1960’s as was Garduño in the 1970’s, and Taboada is currently a member of the board of consultants of the Manual Alvarez Bravo Photographic Center in Oaxaca. Each of these women has examined their country with a critical yet sympathetic eye and we the viewers have been blessed with the fruits of their vision.
