"Sanell Aggenbach: Fool's Gold"
2005-10-26 until 2005-11-26
Bell-Roberts Art Gallery
Cape Town, , ZA South Africa

From October 26, 2005 until November 26, 2005 Bell-Roberts Contemporary Art Gallery presents Sanell Aggenbach: Fool's Gold. "During a five-month residency in Paris I decided to shift the focus of my work from generic social commentary to a more personal introspection. Fool’s Gold was partly motivated by a visit to the Musèe National de la Marine (National Maritime Museum, Paris). My fascination with the early explorers and the idea of perilous travel and discovery inspired the imagery for the works. Fool’s Gold is an amalgamation of various mediums. In the context of this show I have extended strict definitions of painting and reinterpreted the medium in a sculptural context." - Sanell Aggenbach

Exploration and heritage are the underlining concepts, while illusions, fallacies and forgeries are presented to confuse perceptions of reality. The painted works interpret the uncertainty and fear that captured the sailor’s imagination when embarking on these explorations. Illusive destinations and conjured perils are revealed as travelogues and seascapes.

The use of porcelain is significant in this body of work. Through this precious commodity, notions of value and vulnerability are explored. Fragile white objects are presented as heirlooms and artifacts and are displayed either behind glass or precariously balanced.
