"Spendin’ Time on an Image: Trevelyan Clay"
2006-02-23 until 2006-03-05
Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka

Canberra Contemporary Art Space is pleased to announce the second in a series of seven exhibitions showcasing the artistic outcomes of the 2005 CCAS Studio Residency program. The season of exhibitions highlights the emerging talents of Canberra based contemporary artists. Trevelyan Clay paintings currently combine references to aboriginal dot paintings and computer game graphics. These compositions merge visual representations of nature and the virtual environments of computer games.

Clay comments on our occupation of aboriginal land and how our natural landscape is not absolute. He refers to the various simulations of nature that we experience in our everyday lives in the form of television, video games, mediated images and other markers of popular culture. By using and absorbing these simulations Clay proposes that we take ourselves away from a spiritual relationship with the landscape.

This new initiative was made possible through the additional funding CCAS received as part of the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy 2005-2007. Additionally this year the seven participating artists received project funds from the ACT Government through its main project grants for the realisation of a joint catalogue containing documentation and critical writing about each project.
