"1200 x 2400"
2006-07-13 until 2006-08-20
Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre
Canberra City, AC, AU Australia

1200 x 2400 is the standard size of a sheet of plywood in millimetres and also the challenge put to six emerging designers to create a functional prototype. Key issues that the exhibition explores include creating minimal material waste through the making process and affordability achieved through design and efficient work processes. The brief encouraged artists to design objects that would be easy enough to produce so multiples could be ordered.

1200 x 2400 offered artists the opportunity to design and manufacture a unique object which is also cost competitive. The aim was to create multiple units or a single piece from one whole manufactured sheet of material with a standard thickness of 18mm. The material was to be used on it’s own with no other materials added or prominent hardware such as castors or handles and on top of all of that, the work had be functional. The resulting objects are designed to accommodate the body as well as works that define and divide personal space. A common feature in the works is the expression of the planar nature of the material, and the revealing of layers of ply.

Artists: Georgina Donovan, Raquel Gabiola, Craig Harris, Michael Johnson, Angela Kane, Niklavs Rubenis.

Special Event: Conversations with the Curator 1:30pm - 2:30pm Wednesday 2 August Join Craft ACT curator Jas Hugonnet amidst the exhibition 1200 x 2400 for a discussion about the concept and resulting works.
