"Four Footed: Artists Interpret Creatures"
2006-11-17 until 2006-12-31
Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens
Ormond Beach, FL, USA United States of America

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s exhibition of Four-Footed, November 17 – December 31, 2006 will feature a two and three dimensional collection of fourteen artists; Diana Barringer, Rosemary Burns, Mindy Colton, Marsha DeBroske, Denis Deegan, Rose Marie Francke, Margaret Hodge, Hooshang Khorasani, Erik Peterson, Beth Shistle, Dodie Ulery, Barbara Vey and John Wilton. The theme centers on works of domesticated and undomesticated creatures, ranging from traditional realism to abstract interpretations. Hooshang has been Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2004.

Four- Footed illustrates that at some point in their careers, most artists cannot resist some casual exploration into the animal form. For some it is a simple case of respite from the larger, more complex and grueling subject matter which they regularly study. For others, it is a welcome labor of love, capturing their loyal companion, who, by way of proximity became their ally in the otherwise lonely planet existence the artist often assumes. But it can’t be said that in every case, the motivations for these charming, exquisite and sarcastic interpretations are as simple as painting Fido because he’s there. John Wilton’s zany bovine collection of digitized images is, on the surface, a whimsical cow study, but as planned, the work compels the observer to take note of the shrinking wide open spaces the cow occupies in our conscience.

Standouts within the collection of domesticated Four-Footed creatures are the equestrian works of Hooshang Khorasani of Ruston, Louisiana. These magnificent large scale acrylics scream undomesticated as they roar, head-on across the canvas. His choice of color and kinetic, yet exacting brush strokes exacerbate the motion study. These works are so strong that at a glance one can hear the panting breath and the pounding hoofs of these exotic creatures.

The three dimensional bronzes of Mindy Colton and Marsha DeBroske share qualities of style and process, both capturing the magnificence of the equine form. Colton’s large scale sculptures have been commissioned for two central Florida locations.

Four-Footed is fourteen delightful interpretations of the loyal, the docile, the wild and the magnificent. It is well worth a look.
