"Doretta Miller: Tales of Three Cities: Beijing, Florence, Saratoga Springs"
2008-11-04 until 2008-12-06
First Street Gallery
New York, NY, USA United States of America

Doretta Miller is pleased to exhibit the recent series of gouache paintings on paper at First Street Gallery in New York from November 4 through December 6, 2008. Urban scenes focus on the less traveled locations found in three of her favorite cities - Beijing, Florence, and Saratoga Springs. A variety of visual effects are used to offset the strong illusions and include borders with referential motifs, decorative patterns, and trompe l'oeil. First Street Gallery promotes their artists' work with a Gallery Portfolio at absolutearts.com.

Doretta Miller states about her work, "My recent work focuses on places where I have lived and considered from an artist’s perspective. What motivates me is not the portraying of the natural majesty of the landscape or the glory of the urban setting. Rather I have a desire to reveal the quiet corners and common vistas of the urban landscape.

"I approach my subjects with respect, evident through careful and skilled execution of the gouache medium on paper. Balancing the formal aspects of a harmonious composition with subtle content is a challenge both intellectually and technically. Various visual effects are used to offset strong illusions with referential motifs, decorative patterns, and trompe l’oeil. Images of city streets, people going about everyday activities, and decorative objects are used in borders, helping to tell a story that informs the viewer."
