"CHEMA MADOZ: Objects"
2008-11-06 until 2008-12-23
Duncan Miller Gallery
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

Duncan Miller Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of work by Spanish photographer Chema Madoz. The exhibition will be on view from November 6 to December 20, 2008, with an opening reception on Thursday, November 6, from 6 to 9 PM. In his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, Chema Madoz will be exhibiting a series of surreal and refined black-and-white photographs from the past decade. Madoz engages ordinary objects in different ways—by manipulating, juxtaposing, and constructing—and then photographing the new entities without digital manipulation, creating visual images that are placed out of their original context and joined together to create a new reality.

Curator Pedro J Vicent Mullor recently wrote about Madoz’s work: “We look through Madoz’s photographs but suddenly, we realise some oddity within them, and we look at them again more thoughtfully. . . Madoz’s photographs are not made only to be seen; they are also made to be thought about, meditated on, and therefore to be, in all senses, contemplated. And that is precisely why Madoz’s images are so extraordinary; his visual paradoxes need our deduction, our meditation; they are created to be performed and concluded in our minds.”

Chema Madoz's work has been the subject of many international museum exhibitions and he has been published extensively. His work is included in many public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Museo Marugame, Hirai, Japan; and Museo de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires. Born in 1958, Chema Madoz lives and works in Madrid.

Duncan Miller Gallery promotes fine art photography—focusing on 20th century and contemporary photographs from the last decade—and will host retrospective shows of recognized artists' works, as well as the work of emerging artists.
