Hello, friends of Jack Straw!

Let's get the most important order of business out of the way right up front: The deadline for Jack Straw Artist Residency applications is THIS FRIDAY!  You have no excuse not to go download and complete your application today!  If you have any questions at all about the application process, do not hesitate to call or e-mail us.

There's a lot of great Jack Straw-related stuff going on in the next few weeks.  For starters, the Fall Audio Workshops are starting up this week.  There's even still room in our Pro Tools class starting tomorrow, so give us a call if you'd like to sign up!

A couple of past Jack Straw resident artists are releasing their recordings and playing some great shows: see below for info on new releases from Tom Varner and Reptet.

We're finishing up the 2009 Jack Straw Writers Program with a wonderful event at the Seattle Public Library (Central Branch) on November 7th.  Please come and enjoy readings from ten of the twelve 2009 Writers, and pick up a copy of the anthology, too!

We're continuing our theme of sound for film with this month's Composer Spotlight, featuring Aono Jikken Ensemble.  It's sure to be as fascinating and wonderful as Serge Gregory, Susie Kozawa, and Esther Sugai's presentation this month was.

In other news, Jack Straw's Sonarchy Radio on KEXP is moving to Sunday nights at midnight starting November 1st.  To hear live performances of new music and sound art made by Pacific Northwest artists, you can tune to KEXP at midnight on Sunday nights, or stream or podcast archived episodes at any time.

Speaking of radio, we also have news below on both Green ACRE and our Alaska Yukon Pacific Centennial Radio Project.  Lots of great listening coming up from both camps.

Thank you for your support of Jack Straw.  We hope to see you at an event soon!

Aono_jikkenAONO JIKKEN ENSEMBLE
Sounds of Shadow and Light
Wed, November 11, 7:30pm
Jack Straw Productions
4261 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, 98105

In their first Seattle appearance after two years of touring internationally, Aono Jikken Ensemble will discuss and perform examples of their work creating a new live score for legendary director Kenji Mizoguchi's silent film classic The Downfall of Osen (Orizuru Osen), in advance of its premiere at SIFF Cinema on November 15th. Originally released in 1935, this rarely seen tale of love and betrayal in Meiji-era Japan is noteworthy for its complex narrative structure, beautiful images and strong female lead role. AJE's score incorporates a wide variety of musical influences combined with foley/sound design and continues their innovative, bi-lingual take on the almost forgotten art of katsudo benshi (Japanese silent film narration). AJE features William Satake Blauvelt, Dean Moore, Michael Shannon, Naho Shioya, Esther Sugai and Marcia Takamura.

Aono Jikken Ensemble was formed in 1997 to explore new sights and sounds in experimental music and performance-based art. AJE's music utilizes traditional Asian, western and world instruments, found objects, children's toys, and specially created sound devices. Their live silent film scores include the 1926 avant-garde masterpiece A Page of Madness, the 1932 martial arts adventure Swordswoman of Huangjiang, and a series of early dramas and comedies by master directors Yasujiro Ozu and Mikio Naruse. AJE has presented their work locally at the Seattle International Film Festival, Northwest Film Forum, On the Boards, Seattle Asian Art Museum, Theatre Off Jackson, Broadway Performance Hall and internationally at Brazil's Sao Paulo International Film Festival, Poland's ERA New Horizons International Film Festival, France's Paris Autumn Festival, and Canada's Winnipeg New Music Festival and Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

Jack Straw Productions and Washington Composers Forum present Composer Spotlight, a series of talks and performances by composers, musicians, and scholars of new and innovative music every second Wednesday of each month. For more information about Composer Spotlight artists and the series, .

New Media Gallery
The Jack Straw New Media Gallery presents

So LongSo Long
A multimedia installation
by Brent Watanabe

October 16 - December 30, 2009

Artist Talk:
November 20, 2009, 7pm

Jack Straw New Media Gallery

4261 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle 98105
Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 - 5

In So Long, Brent Watanabe continues his exploration of computer controlled installations, incorporating computer generated animations, robotics, and sound.

In the center of the room, a cartoon bird walks through endless, empty computer generated rooms projected on a collapsing paper house. A dead tree projected in the corner communicates through bells and windblown car lot streamers. On the floor, a paper bird flaps out messages using its single intact wing. Each of the characters communicate in Morse Code, trapped and unaware of the other.

The installation is controlled by several computer applications running across networked computers. The applications communicate with each other like a networked video game, but the system is self contained and controls itself with no user interaction.

Brent Watanabe programs computer applications to connect the gap between his interests in drawing, audio and video, mixing high-tech tools with low-tech techniques. He works primarily in video, animation, and computer controlled installations. His short films have been screened at film festivals internationally, and his drawings, videos, and installations have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the US.
