HELEN OF SPARTA offers a comedic retelling of Homer's Iliad from the point of view of the kidnapped Helen of Troy.  After a casual fling with the Spartan queen, Prince Paris carries his lover off to the Trojan capital and soon discovers that Helen is more difficult than he had ever imagined-for example, she refuses to consume foods that begin with any letter other than "Z."  Meanwhile, the rescue expedition led by Helen's husband, Menelaus, runs into immediate difficulties when the Spartan king finds himself on the Pan-Hellenic "do-not-sail" list.

Jacob M. Appel's plays have been performed at the Manhattan Repertory Theatre, Adrienne Theatre (Philadelphia), Detroit Repertory Theatre, Heller Theater (Tulsa), Curtain Players (Columbus), Epilogue Players (Indianapolis), and elsewhere, and have received numerous public readings.  He has published short fiction in more than eighty literary journals including Agni, Michigan Quarterly Review, Missouri Review and Southwest Review.   Jacob is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard Law School and the graduate program in creative writing at New York University.  He currently teaches bioethics at NYU and fiction at the Gotham Writers' Workshop.  More at www.jacobmappel.com.
