HELEN
OF SPARTA offers a comedic retelling of Homer's Iliad from the point of
view of the kidnapped Helen of Troy. After a casual fling with the
Spartan queen, Prince Paris carries his lover off to the Trojan capital
and soon discovers that Helen is more difficult than he had ever
imagined-for example, she refuses to consume foods that begin with any
letter other than "Z." Meanwhile, the rescue expedition led by Helen's
husband, Menelaus, runs into immediate difficulties when the Spartan
king finds himself on the Pan-Hellenic "do-not-sail" list.
Jacob
M. Appel's plays have been performed at the Manhattan Repertory
Theatre, Adrienne Theatre (Philadelphia), Detroit Repertory Theatre,

journals including Agni, Michigan Quarterly Review, Missouri Review and
