La vidéo intitulée True Stories (almost) s’inspire de  
conversations récentes entre l’artiste et trois personnes qui ont  
des liens intimes avec elle : sa mère, son éditeur et une  
collectionneuse. Les notes recueillies sur ces conversations sont à  
la fois personnelles et plein d’humour, tout en demeurant bien  
terre-à-terre. Ces reconstitutions entièrement réinterprétées et  
performées par l’artiste portent sur des conseils donnés  
concernant l’organisation de son quotidien, de sa vie privée et  
comment (elle devrait) orienter sa carrière artistique. True Stories  
(almost) est produit dans un style de collage narratif où 4  
séquences simultanées sont insérées dans un split screen qui sera  
projeté en primeur à La Centrale.

Chaque personnage de la vidéo affiche une allure très particulière,  
caractérisée par des perruques, accessoires et costumes conçus  
spécifiquement par l’artiste. Les esquisses réalisées  
préalablement à leur fabrication seront aussi présentées en  
galerie. Elles font partie d’un projet continu de l’artiste  
intitulé Get ready for the Camera qui montre les recherches  
préparatoires à la réalisation de ses vidéos.

Les projets de Julie Lequin tissent des liens entre l’autobiographie  
et la fiction de manière à brouiller la ligne entre l’artiste  
comme individu et l’artiste comme personnage construit de toutes  
pièces.  Partant souvent de son expérience particulière comme  
Canadienne-française ayant vécu aux États-Unis, ses projets  
explorent les questions de langue et d’identité à travers un  
filtre fantaisiste, bricolé et satirique.
Julie Lequin est une artiste multidisciplinaire qui vit et travaille  
au Québec. Ses médiums de prédilection sont la performance, la  
vidéo, l’écriture et le dessin. Elle a complété sa formation  
académique en 2005 par l’obtention d’une maîtrise en arts du Art  
Center College of Design à Pasadena aux États-Unis. Son travail a  
été présenté internationalement, dont à White Columns à New  
York, au Los Angeles County Museum of Art et au Santa Barbara  
Contemporary Arts Forum en Californie. Plusieurs de ses projets

“Video Night with Julie Lequin” as part of Nuit Blanche
saturday, february 27, screenings at 10pm and 1am

The video titled True Stories (almost) is loosely based on recent  
conversations with three people closely involved with her personal  
life: her mother, a publisher and a collector.  The result of the  
notes taken from these exchanges is personal and full of humor. The  
reenactments, all performed by the artist, are inspired by the advice  
given to her on how she should manage her everyday life and art  
career.  Edited to create a coherent narrative collage, the video  
piece is exhibited as a split screen four-channel projection, and  
will be premiering at La Centrale.

Each persona in the video has a very distinct image that is  
constructed by wigs, accessories and costumes made specifically for  
each by the artist. The sketches done before their fabrication will  
also be presented in the gallery. They are part of an ongoing project  
titled Get ready for the Camera, that shows preparatory research for  
the costume and the script for the video.

Julie Lequin’s projects interweave personal history with  
fictionalized events in a manner that blurs the line between the  
artist as individual and an artist as a self-constructed persona.  
Coming from the experience of being a French-Canadian in the U.S.A.,  
her work explores questions of language and identity through a  
whimsical, crafty and satirical lens.

Julie Lequin is a multidisciplinary artist that lives and works in  
Quebec. Her preferred mediums are performance, video, writing and  
drawing.  She received a MFA from the Art Center College of Design,  
Pasadena, U.S.A. in 2005. Her work has been presented both in the  
Americas and internationally at institutions such as White Columns in  
New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Santa Barbara  
Contemporary Arts Forum in California. Most of her work can be seen
