Renovation of Kahn’s Yale Art Gallery Building Wins Prestigious Award

New Haven, Conn. — The acclaimed restoration by Polshek Partnership Architects of Louis I. Kahn’s building of Yale University’s Art Gallery has earned the New York firm a 2010 Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects.
 
The three-year renovation of the 1953 landmark, which is considered Kahn’s first masterpiece, was heralded as a feat of preservation when it was completed in 2006. Nicolai Ouroussoff of the New York Times declared that Polshek’s painstaking restoration put Kahn “back on the pedestal he so richly deserves.”
 
In making the Honor Award, the jurors praised not only Polshek’s “especially skillful repair” and “masterful response to the work of a master,” but cited Yale for its “superior commitment to preservation.”
 
Founded in 1857, the American Institute of Architects bestows Honor Awards in recognition of achievements in the profession and to establish “a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, and inform the public of the breadth and value of architecture practice.”
 
The restoration of the Kahn building was one of 14 projects recognized with a 2010 Honor Award. The redesign of Alice Tully Hall in New York, the adaptive reuse of an industrial building in Philadelphia as corporate headquarters for Urban Outfitters, and the restoration of an historic Biloxi home ravaged by hurricane Katrina were among the other recipients of the award.
