February 4 to March 20, 2010
Please join us for the opening on Thursday, February 4th from 7 to 9 p.m.
Continuing with her exploration of pareidolia — the uncanny recognition of faces in objects and places — Sandra Meigs presents a new series of eight paintings on panel that extend from the wall in multiple directions. Each portrait is composed of simple blocks of monochromatic colour and animated further with additional appendages made of dyed silk or wool in matching hues. The works are improvisational exercises, suggesting both intuitive or spontaneous approaches to abstraction and the theatrics of slapstick comedy. It is as if The Fold Heads form a cast of extemporaneous characters who remain transfixed in advance of the commotion that is to take place as soon as the viewer leaves the room.
