Michael Platt:
In Abandoned Places
opening reception. Saturday, February 6, 6.30-9pm
show dates. February 3 - March 13, 2010
Images holding the essences of memory -- biding time, wanting, celebrating...
Barely discernible stories of who was here and what happened there...
Visions of imagined spaces -- layering time within abandoned, unoccupied and frequently dilapidated
interior rooms and exteriors.
There is always someting.
DC artist Michael Platt is widely recognized for his fusion of digital
conventional photography, drawing, and printmaking. Recent works feature his subjects - "the marginalized and the survivors" - in spaces that have been discarded - a bare forest, a drained fountain, a crumbling room.
Platt has received numerous grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and received the Mayor's Art Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts in 1999. He has public collections in institutions such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the David C. Driskell Center of the University of Maryland, Yale University Art Gallery, Hampton University Museum, and Schomburg Research Center in Black Culture.

In Memory
Paul Jones, Renowned Collector of African American Art, dies at 81
LA TIMES: Despite humble beginnings in Alabama and never being independently wealthy, Jones began buying pieces in the 1960s after noting that African American art was underrepresented in public galleries.
When his collection of drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures and other works grew into the hundreds, he decided it should be used for educational purposes. He has donated much of his extensive collection to universities in Delaware and Alabama, including works by Hughie Lee-Smith, Robert Colescott, and Margo Humphrey.
Paul Jones with IVG Director Tim Davis at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
"Paul Jones was a friend and an avid collector of art. When in Washington, he always tried to drop by the gallery to see our exhibitions and to discuss his journey in seeking out new African American artists. He will surely be missed." Tim Davis | |
