"Back Home : Solo Exhibition by Richard Winkworth"
2010-02-23 until 2010-03-18
Karin Weber Gallery
SoHo, , HK Hong Kong

'Back home' is the theme of Richard Winkworth's 2010 Chinese New Year show at the Karin Weber Gallery. Richard has been showing work in Hong Kong since 1995. He had successful one man shows in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2007. During this time his studio was in France and the work was shipped here. Now, for the first time, the new work in this show was all made at a local studio in Hong Kong. Richard spent his first eleven years in Southeast Asia, and so the title of this show refers to 'being back'.

'Third culture kids' is a twentieth century phenomenon which describes the impact of spending your childhood in a culture which is not that of your parents - leaving you with feeling something you may not appear to be. Richard's work shows the influence of Southeast Asian imagery and colouring as seen through western eyes. Richard works in a variety of media: oil, acrylic and encaustic paint. This show also demonstrates the varying scale of Richard's work from an encaustic multiple image installation inspired by a visit to Ladakh, and a large oil painting of Ap Lei Chau, to smaller works in acrylic on carton recovered from a Hong Kong warehouses where he has now based his studio.

Richard Winkworth obtained his MFA at Chelsea School of Art and his works can be found in both private and public collections.
