Traver Gallery is proud to present Blue Moon, a solo exhibition featuring the needlepoint, mosaic, monotype, and painted portraiture of Portland-based artist Mary Josephson. This show features more than 15 richly textured, narrative artworks -- each piece depicting a unique tale of the human experience.
Driven by her passion to record and pay homage to the simple, yet important moments of everyday life, Mary's artworks tell a stories of individuals - each artwork brimming with personal references, they are a beautiful amalgam of allegorical objects and color. While the individual is most prominent in her work, the portraits also convey a deep sense of collective humanity, pointing to a shared experience and a global culture. The things we have in common, "are the most important elements of life, the secrets of humanity", says Josephson.
Josephson describes her process as being a conduit for thought, emotion, and expression. Well known for her vivid color palette, and strong sense of design, her recent exploration of diverse media embraces and references the vocabulary and technique of the American folk art tradition. To Josephson, the process and the portrait are inextricably linked - every portrait is a quiet shrine to an individual who is "as rare and singular as a blue moon"
Mary Josephson was born in 1953 in Biloxi, Mississippi. She holds a BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. Josephson has had numerous solo exhibitions along the West Coast and has received numerous commissions including Tigard Public Library (2004), Intersections/Portland Fire and Rescue (2003), and Airtouch Cellular (2000).. Her work is in many collections including Microsoft, Oregon Health Sciences University, Tacoma Art Museum and SAFECO. Selected Awards include The Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Fund for Mural Painting Fellowship from the National Academy of Design in New York City in 2003, and the Individual Artist Fellowship Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission in 1994.
