There are few references that define our association
with other cultures from around the world. First, there is direct interaction:
we experience the culture. Second, there is word of mouth: a friend tells us
about their experience. Third, there is media: what a stranger (or corporation)
tells us about a culture.
The majority of people in the world rely on the third
form of reference to define the culture of Colombia. The result: a perspective
of violence. However, Colombia is not violence. Colombia and its culture are so
intricate, yet at the same time, so very forward.
With Forasteros, Dancing Elephant Projects
seeks to alter the world's perception of Colombia through yet another reference:
Art. Works will be presented from three artists from different parts of the
world that will utilize their references of direct interaction, word of mouth,
and media to create work that not only symbolizes an outsider perspective of
Colombia, but embraces and reconfigures it.
