Indepth Arts News: "Walter King : Midwest Dialog, A Retrospective of Works" 2010-08-23 until 2010-09-23 Shot Tower Gallery at Fort Hayes Columbus, OH, USA United States of America
Walter was born in Baltimore MD in 1952. His parents moved
to Oklahoma in 1959. He moved his family to Columbus OH in
1976. After a short stint as a teaching fellow at Wichita
State University in Kansas he spent 2 years working in
Oklahoma as a graphic artist and 2 years of grad school in
Boston (Boston University College of Fine Art) he returned
to Columbus to teach at the Columbus College of Art and
Design in 1985. What was to be a transitional career move
became a lifes work.
For most of his artistic life Walter has made a significant
contribution to Ohio art both as an artist and educator.
For three decades after moving to Columbus from Oklahoma
when he was 23 to attend CCAD he has exhibited his
paintings, worked as a graphic artist, an illustrator, even
a mannequin repairman re-sculpting broken noses, fingers and
other smashed body parts. An innovative and highly respected
painter, an accomplished draftsman, published illustrator
and poet and an inspirational teacher, Walt’s
local exhibitions have consistently received positive
reviews not only for his own work but for exhibitions
he’s helped organize and curate from the
Columbus Dispatch arts writers, Dialog Magazine, the New
Arts Examiner. The Indianapolis Star and the Tulsa World.
In spite of his remarkable accomplishments, Walts sometimes
dreamy and sometimes shockingly emotive and engaging work is
not nearly as well known as we think it should be. This
retrospective exhibition seeks to locate Walts work in the
place of prominence it deserves. The exhibition includes
some 150 paintings, many are major works of art. The show
also will highlight his drawings, prints, photography,
sculpture, illustration and graphic design as well as
preparatory sketches and experimental videos.
Altogether there will be more than 250 works filling the
Shot Tower Gallery, one of the largest and the oldest
working art gallery in Ohio. If you only go to see one art
exhibition this year this is the one you won’t want to miss.
