Artist Statement for Kamal Abu

It is an intricate question for an artist to answer from “the” single perspective, when he is asked what is intended to convey in his expression. For a moment it might seem as if he is telling us a story with the strokes of his brush, although there are much more left in the observer’s layers of consciousness. I perceptibly do have, to a certain extent, an awareness about the experienced life, which is somewhat concrete and visibly factual; but its emotional perception can only be understood by a conscious mind and I think my experimental art can touch the gush of it. Having said so, however, it is extremely important for me to engage the average viewers with my rationale. The question I intended to raise through the semi abstract criticism of the contemporary society, more or less, demands a minimum level of collective attention since the elements were taken from the very society we dwell in. the paintings in order to coordinate with the viewer’s acceptance level. In “There was no eye witness”, for instance, the title gives an impulsive indication of what the photographs of closed eyes in digital print with the backdrop of oil painting might suggest. It shows a disturbing mindset toward an ongoing ugliness of urban existence. I felt that a combination of multiple layers gives deeper meanings to an painting. I used different mediums to create effects of layers; for instance, the combination of oil, mixed media and charcoal works was an honest effort to create new dimensions in my paintings. I believe it also intrigues the imagination of a contemporary viewer; and besides, I had been able to express my thoughts quite vibrantly through this experiment.

I have completed Bachelor of Fine art (hons) 1998 and obtained my Masters of Fine Art2000 from University Of Dhaka major Drawing and Painting, Bangladesh. During my course I have study Western art as well Indian Art ancient to contemporary and completed a dissertation on my art work and art thought. I have arrange three solo exhibition my of experimental paintings and participated around more than fifty group shows. Although I have completed my masters in drawing and painting.
