| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I have always enjoyed drawing and sketching. When I was younger I played the trombone in high school and then in jazz and Latin bands. Playing in clubs, dancehalls and park concerts was fun but music is an art that requires the cooperation of other musicians. I became an artist because it is a setting in which the artist relies primarily on his or herself to execute a piece. I have gottten a lot of pleasure from this decision and have felt no regret in going from music to the fine arts. |

| Your Personal Biography |
Angel Luis Cruz was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1951. His family relocated to New York City when he was five years old and settled in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC. He began developing an interest in art while attending New York City Community College (now New York City College of Technology) in the 1970's. At that time he majored in Early Childhood Education while working as a school teacher’s assistant. After some time he registered for elective courses in art history. Later, while attending Brooklyn College, he registered for his first elective drawing and painting classes while still majoring in Early Childhood Education. After completing the requirements for a bachelor's degree in education, he decided to return to Brooklyn College as an art major to complete the requirements for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. As a graduate student at Brooklyn College he served as vice president of the Graduate Art Students Union (GASU) and, in the Spring of 1999, he completed the requirements for the graduate degree in Fine Arts (MFA). Since then Cruz has continued working independently at painting and sculpture. He has accepted invitations to conduct lectures in art and painting to elementary school as well as junior high school students and has participated in a number of group art shows and exhibitions. |
