Artist statement 2007
Searching for a surface texture that conveys the scraping away and adding on of history.
Also finding a simple way to express movement, and the spiritual aspect to traditional dance. My lines, colour and tone should appear effortless and rapid, varied and full in form, immediate and pure.
I trained in Visual Arts at Lancaster University and Goldsmiths College, London, and have taught Art in UK curriculum schools around the world since 1988. Having lived in six different countries across Europe, Asia and Latin America, I use local materials out of necessity as much as out of interest. I have been a member of Circulo de Dibujo, a group of professional artists dedicated to drawing in Caracas, Venezuela, since 2002.
I am currently working on paper with mixed media such as graphite, ink and paint as well as on canvas with mixed media and oils, using a variety of mark-making tools from brushes and sponges to bamboo and Chinese brushes....
