Biggest Artistic Inspiration Man Made. Many things come to mind when those two words are uttered together. A man made disaster is one of them. How better to change that immediate connection than to take things that could be considered a disaster, or at the very least, the discards of man and turn them into something beautiful? Turn them into something else man made – art.
Wichita native, Collin Allen, does just that with his new one man show “Man Made” which opens June 17, 2011 at the Go Away Garage, 508 S. Commerce and runs until July 8th. Included in his upcoming show is some of his newest work which showcases his use of one of the past century’s biggest inventions that has become obsolete with new technology. Collin’s light fixtures made from telegraph insulator caps are just one way he takes the discarded, unused relics of man and turns them into something new and interesting.
“Man Made” will highlight Collin’s multitude of artistic endeavors including paintings, sculptural wood hangings, leather and metal workings, and multi-media fabric renderings. “This will be the largest show that I have done to date,” he says, “and not just in the number of pieces but in the size of them. Some of the paintings are 20 feet long or go floor to ceiling.” For those without a large space for work of that size, Collin has leather wallets and journals made from rescued leather scraps and belt buckles made from vintage license plates.
Collin’s inspiration is readily seen in his work. He takes the used up bits and pieces of life and morphs it into something intriguing and beautiful. “The things I create are gleaned from a childhood of looking at broken windows and cracked door frames and discarded beer bottle caps and seeing not what it had been but what it could be,” he says. All of his supplies are recycled goods and he sees not just the practicality of this, or the positive effects on the environment, but also the stories behind the materials. Collin is particularly excited about the new lights he’s made. “These insulator caps were on those poles for over 100 years. Think of all of the wonderful news that was sent by them over that time and, of course, the tragedy too. Now they can shine a light on someone’s daily life.”
Collin’s goal with this show is to remind people of the importance of looking at things from a different angle every now and then.
