Artist Statement:
Happy Mascots!
Mascots are ubiquitous creatures in Asia. Practically ever municipality, festival, or institution has one, including the police departments of Seoul (“Podari”) and Tokyo (“Pipo-Kun”). They can be animals, humans, or some anthropomorphic collision of the two.
From the myriad of forms mascots come in I depict their “archetypical” features in a manner that puts them on the threshold of abstraction, setting up an interplay between these vernacular characters and the traditions of abstract painting.
The geometric shapes (ovals, diamonds, hexagons, and so on) serve to bring together the disparate imagery as a cohesive body of work and sometimes allude to parts of the figure while remaining abstract. Additionally, the images often include Asian motifs (gourd shapes, ornamental designs from royal artifacts, and so on).
