Artist Statement:
Painting for the artist, Anthony White is somewhere between depiction of representational form, intuitive unconscious performance and objectifying the essence of landscape. He is essentially finding a metaphor for his experience of the world around him.
Forms emerge via the artists will, and not surprisingly also by accident, ie their own accord. The forms that stay to inform the picture are the ones that have been “lived” through. These lived through forms acquire a degree of authenticity and these engage the audience with content.
Of utmost importance to this content are the faculties of memory and imagination. The paintings are usually expressive, heavily impastoed, gritty and masculine. The painterly surface is treated with an aggressive force, surfaces are scraped, gouged and a range of implements are used to make weighty depiction of space and form.
