| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
All wildlife and domestic animals are my inspiration. I was born in San Diego, Calif., just a few blocks from the S. D. Zoo. My father also loved animals, so nearly every Sunday we would visit the zoo. My favorite was a Silver Back Gorilla named Albert. Little did I know that someday I would travel to Africa and see the endangered Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. In l986 I fulfilled my life long dream and traveled to Rwanda, East Africa and ventured into the Virunga Mountains to viewed these magnificent Gorillas up close and personal. I was five feet from a Silver Back, and one of the juveniles slapped me on the knee, as he ran by while I balanced on a narrow trail. That was exciting enough, but then a young female Gorilla charged us...our tracker must have startled her and that was her way of telling us to get out of her space.
My family and I were also privileged to share our lives with a female bobcat named "Precious" for twenty years. She was someone's pet that somehow escaped and was found in a patio of a house that was on a canyon. She had a thin brown collar on with no identification, and was shot in the hind leg. Since she was domesticated, and de-clawed, she could not hunt and was starving. We took her and placed an ad in the paper, but no one claimed her, so she remained with us, and became a member of our family. Precious was a great subject for many of my paintings. Sadly she passed away of a stroke in l990. We think she was around 22 years old. We will always miss her. |
