Artist’s Statement
Art, for me, is a constant reminder to appreciate the simple pleasures of everyday life. Ideas for my work come from taking the time to slow down and notice details – the way the light hits a wine glass, architectural lines, or combinations of color and texture.
Photography was my first love. My dad kept a darkroom in a hall closet of our house when I was little. When he was developing film, he would let my sister and me roll the film canister back and forth on the bathroom floor to agitate the film. As soon as I showed an interest in photography, he taught me how to use his camera. That manual Canon FT was the camera I took off the college at the University of Tennessee. I earned a BFA in photography and watercolor while working as a photographer for the school newspaper.
Translating my photographs into watercolor paintings adds another layer of artistic interpretation. I use light and careful framing to compose my photographs. Then I use the flowing blending nature of the paint and the texture of the watercolor paper to enhance the subject further. It’...
