Artist Statement:
German Molina’s “Mundo Magico”, is a banquet of color and images. The first things you see are not immediately clear but slowly open up to recognition and then clarity. Hatching and outlining with black lines separate foreground and background. There is no concern with realism but highly stylized abstraction, which are painted in bright colors and flattened by their lack of modeling. Humor and delight are words that come to mind with the frivolity and color objects on which he paints. He uses bottles, tables, or shoes and paints on them as if they were canvases, transforming the objects into a playful and appealing curios. German Molina states that in his art he tries to find and give new life to things by giving coherence to them and transforming them with new iconography. The magic of reinvention and the tolerance for new dimension in our daily life make these pieces indeed magical and appealing.
German was born in Havana, Cuba in the early fifties. He studied and taught art until 1992 when he left to Ecuador and requested political asylum. While in Cuba, he participated extensively in local and European exhibition for which he received many prizes and accolades, ...
