| Your Personal Biography |
Avner Levinson was born in Jerusalem, Israel in 1981. He started to make art at a very young age. From 1996 to 1999 he studied sculpture in two settings: in Stav-Pisul in Jerusalem, and in his own studio space. His main interest was in sculpting heads from his imagination as a way of capturing the essence of a person.
Through rendering heads he felt as though he brought forth a conversation between the inner and outer faces of a person. Twenty of these heads were exhibited in Jerusalem in 1999.
From 1999-2003 he served in the Israeli army, bringing him close to the landscape of his country. Later landscapes emerged as a new important theme in his work. He then studied with the artist Zvi Lachman at the Tel-Aviv Museum from 2003-2005. During this time he also learned casting techniques, including the process of bronze casting, at the A.P. Casting Factory in Bet Yanai, Israel.
In 2005 He enrolled in the New York Studio School’s Master of Fine Arts program, where he has worked closely with Bruce Gagnier and Garth Evans.
He is currently working directly in plaster on abstract pieces that lend themselves to figurative interpretations, reminding the viewer of landscapes, animals or human forms without specifically defining them.
