Artist Statement:
One is not defined simply by their chosen
craft, or profession; I am not my art, and
my art is not defined by whatever labels
the galleries, the representatives, or the
critics assign it; Whether it be, Outsider
Art, Surrealism, or Neo-Expressionism.
Although all of these labels have at one
point, or another, been applied to my
work, that is not the sum and total of my
art.
Likewise, psychotic, lazy, hermit, and
talented, are all labels and stereotypes
that have been applied to me at one time,
or another, throughout my life. I think of
these labels as degradations of the true
spirit of myself and my chosen mode of
expression. Simply put, they are insulting.
I am not defined by my suffering, by my
mental, nor by my physical health , or by
my handicaps or by my abilities, ;
Therefore, I reject all labels,
classifications, groupings, or what- not.
Do not ask me to define myself, or to
define my work. I simply will not answer.
Like me, my art is what it is. And it will
remain so. Unique and true to its form.
I ask the viewer to do one thing as they
look upon my ...

Jason Passeno
Jason Passeno was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1972. He had shown an interest and ability for art at a young age. By the age of nine, he was enrolled in youth
classes at Detroit's own Center for Creative Studies (now The College of Creative Studies). There, he started he started to establish discipline and the foundation of his raw and developing potential. Growing up he attended classes at Pewabic Pottery, in Detroit, and classes at the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Association, of which he was a member. Jason went on to graduate from Henry Ford Community College, with an Associates Degree in fine art. It was here that he began to develop his own unique style and approach to making art. Jason is currently studying computer graphics at Schoolcraft College, in Livonia, Michigan, concentrating on web graphics, and illustration.
Jason's first major exhibition came in 2000, where he was invited to the Hollywood Art and Film Festival, hosted by Angel Citi, in North Hollywood, California. Before long, Jason, had a series of shows lined up in his native Detroit area. He has been involved in exhibitions with other well respected artists, such as Karl Schneider, owner and director of Izzy's Raw Art Gallery, in Detroit, and the late Jacques Karamanoukian, who helped bring Art Brut and Outsider art influences to Detroit, through Le Minotoure Gallery, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Jacques discovered both Sam McKee and Tyree Guyton, of The Heidelberg Project fame.) Other notable artists Jason has exhibited with include, Maurice Greenia, Jr. (a.k.a. Maugre), Sean Hogan, George Graveldinger, Jim Puttingham and John Elkerr.
Jason’s style has been influenced by multiple factors. The works of post-expressionist Edvard Munch; both veristic and automatistic surrealism (chiefly, the works of both Salvadore Dali and Andre Masson respectively); the angst ridden expressionistic prints of Kathe Kollwitz, the disjointed figurative work of Francis Bacon, and the eerie visionary imaginings of H. R. Giger have all had profound impact on his approach. The concepts of the psyche and the archetypes presented by Carl Jung, as well as those introduced by the Transcendental and Existential movements, have also played more than a small part in the formation of his style. The concepts of pure truth, as well as a sense of spirituality, present in Jason’s work is owed to the Transcendentalist philosophy. The concept of Angst, and the sense of despair, arise from the Existential philosophy.
Although he has found some acceptance into the Detroit Outsider art community, Jason does not see himself as an Outsider artist in its purist sense. Instead, he wants to feel free to experiment . “I want to be able to express myself without devotion to one style, or theme. I admire many different artists and their respective styles. I get influenced by them, and I may, from time to time, alter my approach and challenge my own bounderies.”
