Artist Statement:
I'm intriqued by balance/off-balance and exaggeration and I look for postures that remind me of those. It's often the smallest detail that makes a piece suddenly take on a recognizable persona. Music, circus acts, people and plant life run through my head as I work and feel my way through the form.
My work almost always starts on the wheel and I throw a base that acts as a pedestal for a more elaborate lid. The pieces continue to appear more precarious, but the longest spires I can pull make the best "canvases" for animating movement. I create textures through trimming and carving that play with the glazes, pooling and breaking over the horizontal ridges to create a juxtaposition of color.
