Artist Statement:
In high school I fell in love with the tranquility of the darkroom. I apprenticed with the late Tibor Horvath in classical portrait photography. My classical training has led me to photograph the nude, the adornment of the body through piercings, tatoos, henna and body paint. I took an information technology design course and discovered digi-cams, scans and photoshop’s potential. I went from the tactile, chemical based darkroom to the computer keyboard for image manipulation experimentation. My passion is being behind the camera whether it's capturing one still image or a series of them.
My influences are an eclectic group of portrait photographers including Diane Arbus, Edward Steichen and Joel Peter Witkin. Arbus with her freaks, Steichen with his classic beauty and Witkin with his twisted, manipulated bodies of the dead and the living. The Science fiction genre, as represented in popular culture, has been reflected in some my past work. My recent commission "wallflowers" allowed me the freedom to explore the urban walls of Toronto and beyond to find my voice. I gathered images of flowers and scrutinized the textures that are always present but never truly noticed. I took the raw in camera files, transfered ...
