Artist Statement:
My professional career began in 1973 when I earned my MFA. In my early works I felt my paintings where an illusion and only seemed to partially fulfill my desire for a more complete expression. Now my works explore the interplay of transitional reality and abstract concepts in oil on canvas and digital photography.
It is provocative to me to express myself through physical, intellectual, and spiritual endeavors . My art offers me the forum for this expression. The viscosity of paint gives scale, while it's liquid flow carries the emotions of a poetic heart. The formation of shapes into composition express a thoughtful logic and the unity of all elements breaths life into the spirit of the work. In addition explored shapes and content fits with my digital images.
Pursuit of excellence in design, craftsmanship and expression are my artistic goals. To create images that provoke thought and communicate our connection with nature, spirit, self and each other.

Along with a lifetime of personal artwork in painting, sculpture and photographic travels, I am an instructor at the Art Institute of Seattle. My focus there is teaching the next generation of artists digital imaging theory and practice.
Using Photoshop as a tool for image manipulation has allowed for symphonic complexity in the design of my paintings that goes far beyond the normal choices one makes while working through traditional means.
In 2001, 2003, and 2005, I won finalist “Guru” awards in the “artistic category” of the Photoshop world competition sponsored by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.
My career began after receiving a BFA from East Carolina U. in 73 and an MFA, from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in 75. I’ve been a full time artist since 1975 and I have many successful one man-shows in my career. In the 80’s Los Angeles offered a wealth of subject matter, but I found my direction in a combination of abstract expressionism and realism, which is central to my work today.
As an artist who is centered in seeing the spiritual within nature, I am moved to express visions by both abstract imagery and narrative reality. In this way my work allows the viewer to experience feelings as imagery, sound as color, prayer as a composition.
In 1994, I moved to Washington State where I discovered the beaches and wide-open spaces of the Northwest. Currently, my studio is in Redmond, Washington. I work in the studio on paintings, sculptures and digital photographs that are now designed to open the mind and support subconscious healing.
My work is serious and directed. New work builds on a style developed in L.A. but with a greater focus on content and a unique difference in how I approach traditional oil paint applications.
In 2006, my sculpture was chosen for inclusion in the City of Bellevue Sculpture Biennial. 40 works were chosen from over 527 entries worldwide. I was selected for a TV interview that was used to promote the show.
I am a committed life long artist with a focus on quality, content and expression and am at the point in my career where I have a great deal of experience to offer to the leading edge of such expressions. I am in my “master works” time of life. I hope you agree and find my work to your liking. |
