Welcome to Menahem Barshalom's Portfolio.
"Photography and Motion"
A few years ago I began sending greeting cards to my friends, using my own nature photos and text. In April 2004, I was left with 17 copies of the same picture which I had used for a year as an anniversary "card" (two pigeons on a branch), and wanted to find another picture to use. Rather than throw away the 17 pix,I fanned them out in my hand...and saw the potential for a three-dimensional artform. That's how I began to develop my art style.
My work is done painstakingly by hand, not by computer, with alot of planning (usually) and patience (always). I look into each new photo that I feel has the potential to become a new work, and have it developed a few dozen times. Then I experiment until I find the best design. I rely on my eyes to measure accurate distances in the layout, and only at times use a ruler. In most of my works, I glue the photos on top of each other. I have used, to date, 16-96 photos per work.
